Treat of Russian films

A Russian film fest is on from August 29 to September 1

REALISTIC PORTRAYAL From "At Home Among Strangers."

The Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation in association with the Russian Centre of Science and Culture is organising a Russian film festival from August 29 to September 1, at the Russian Cultural Centre, 74, Kasturi Ranga Road.

On August 29, 6.15 p.m., K. A. Abbas' "Journey Beyond Three Seas" will be screened.

"Prisoner of the Mountain" (August 30, 6.15 p.m.) revolves around Vanya, a raw recruit in the Soviet Army, who is sent to the Caucasus. He and a fellow soldier are kept alive by a local villager. But will he survive for long? The Oscar nominated-film is directed by Sergei Bodrov. At 8 p.m., the Leonid Gaidai-directed "Diamond Arms" will be screened. The protagonist of this tale is Semyon Gorbunkov, who breaks his arm in Istanbul. What he does not know is that this is a signal for a gang of smugglers who bandage his arm with gold and diamonds. He returns home only to find the smugglers and the police after him.

"The Thief" (August 31, 6.15 p.m.) is about three people — Tolyan, Katya and her son Sanya. Katya falls in love with Tolyan, who find her a house. But what is his motive? And how will it affect their lives? At 8 p.m., the same day, "At Home Among Strangers" will be screened. The film, directed by Nikita Miknalkov, is set in the Civil War.

On September 1, 6.15 p.m., "Brother" will be screened. The film traces the journey of 17-year-old Farukh and his 7-year-old brother Azamat, to meet their father. The director is Bakhtyar Khudojnazarov. At 8 p.m., it will be the turn of Aleksandr Ptushko's "The Tale of Tsar Saltan." The film is set in a city of crystal palaces, golden-domed churches and brightly painted tower rooms.
