Opportunity beckons

Young and willing with a story to show and tell? Try your luck with the CNN awards for young journalists

If you are a young, bright and dynamic young journalist then the opportunity is calling you. CNN in association with ITC-Welcome group hotels announced the launch of the fourth edition of the CNN Young Journalist Award this past week. In addition to CNN-YJA, two new categories have been started this year — CNN Aspiring Journalist Award in collaboration with Hindustan Times and CNN Citizen Journalist Award in association with CNN-IBN.

Satinder Bindra, CNN's Senior International Correspondent, and Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-chief, CNN-IBN, were present at the launch and sounded quite confident with the entries they had been receiving. CNN had launched the CNN-YJA award in 2003 in India and Pakistan and since then it has been a huge success.

The CNN-YJA is given in the television and print/online categories to journalists in the age group of 22 to 28 years. Entrants for the television category must submit a feature style television news package that has been produced or aired between January 1, 2006 and September 30, 2006. For the print/online category, the article must be written solely by the individual and must have been published. For both the categories, the news story must bear relevance to the Indian or Pakistani context. For the CNN Aspiring Journalist Award, the entrant is supposed to submit an essay in 1000 words on the topic `Are sting operations justified?'

The last date for the receipt of entries for both the award categories is October 12, 2006. The winner of the CNN-YJA will be felicitated with the title and get a chance to work for one week at CNN's International Headquarters in Atlanta.

The winners of the CNN-AJA in the television category will do an internship with the CNN-IBN bureau, and the winner in the print category will get an opportunity to intern at Hindustan Times.

For the CNN Citizen Journalist an executive jury will judge the entries received and aired by the channel between January 1, 2006 and September 30, 2006"The most important purpose of media is to involve active participation and this will definitely make it interactive," adds Rajdeep Sardesai.
