Fiestas on a diet
|
They covered great distance on a measly fuel allowance and proved a point
|
If you've been cursing your car for poor fuel economy, think again. Because it's time to spare the poor automobile and direct those expletives at the kind of traffic and road conditions we encounter on a daily basis.
To prove a point, Autocar India, one of the country's leading auto monthly magazines, took a couple of Ford Fiestas around the high-speed track at the Vehicle Research & Development Establishment (VRDE) in Ahmednagar. While one was a petrol, the second car was a diesel, and the objective was to establish a national record for the maximum distance covered on just a tank of fuel each. The Max Mileage Marathon was monitored and supervised by the Federation of Motor Sports Association of India (FMSCI) and representatives of the Limca Book of Records.
The Ford Fiesta 1.4 petrol managed to travel for 1,183 km before it ran out of petrol nearly 22 hours later - it managed 22.43kpl through the carefully controlled driving experience which mandated a steady driving speed of between 50 and 70 kph. On the other hand, the Fiesta 1.4 diesel managed to stay on track for a whole 29 hours, covering 1570.8 km and returning 31.48kpl! Now it's up to the authorities to get their act together, fill up all those potholes that dot Indian roads, and ensure better traffic management - point proven indeed.
