A long, long cake on record

The longest cake, baked by Cochin Bakery, got into the Limca Book of Records on Sunday



THIS TAKES THE CAKE A record worth eating

At the Durbar Hall Grounds, on Sunday last, a 216-foot cake waited to be eaten, instead people filed past, in a queue, looking at churches, past Indian presidents, prime ministers, churches, mosques, temples and the Bharat award winners from Kerala, like Mohanlal, Mammooty, Murali, Shobhana. For they were all there, forming the icing collage on the cake, the longest so far, entering the Limca Book of Records for baking the longest cake.

It weighed roughly 804 kg and cost a cool Rs 1.40 lakh. Eight people headed by M.P. Ramesh, owner of the enterprise, achieved this feat. It was done to announce the opening of Cochin Bakery once again in the city, at Kumaranasan Junction, Kaloor- Kadavanthara Road. The interesting icing collage was done in fresh butter and cream. Not only personalities, but the art forms like kathakali, mohiniattam and koothu were also carefully crafted on the icing.

Ramesh, who is involved closely with baking processes in his outlets is also an animal lover and a book lover too.

One for each

Everybody who came to see the cake got a piece of it late evening. Justice Narayana Kurup cut the cake and inaugurated the venture.

Now for the cake: The base of it was tea cake, of which the different layers were sandwiched with jam and topped with icing comprising of butter cream. Here are the details that will interest the baker in you. For the tea cake, 149 kg of maida was used. Margarine, eggs and sugar, each weighing 140 kg were added and 32 kg of jam. Icing sugar, 160 kg, butter 45 kg, Condensed milk, 7.5 kg. The total icing weight was 212.5 kg. The total weight of the cake was 804.5 kg.

The number of decorations of people, places and events totalled 170.

Work started on August 26 at 12.00 pm and it was completed at 2 pm the next day, taking 26 hours. P.P. Peeter from the Limca Book of Records was sure bowled over.

The Durbar Hall ground presented a happy picture with a huge crowd enjoying cake.
