Stop at Maranakatte if you are headed for Kollur

REFRESHING EXPERIENCE The main temple at Maranakatte
Anyone travelling to Kollur in Udupi district, famous for the temple of Mookambika, makes a stop at Maranakatte. The myth goes that Mookambika killed the demon Mookasura here with the Sri Chakra.
Thus the name Maranakatte, literally the altar of death. However, since the demon was a devotee of the Devi, she gave him a boon too; that people would offer him worship exactly one month before the rathotsava takes place at Kollur.
The worship of Shri Yakshi and Shri Brihalingeswara Devaru at the temples here is essentially Vedic. There is a Sri Chakra Yantra near the temple believed to be installed by Adi Sankara. Yet another temple here is dedicated to Sri Haiguli and Sri Huli Devaru.
Brahma Kunda stream flows to north of the temple, enhancing the scenic beauty of the forests and hills around. Devotees have a dip in the stream prior to performing rituals. Those who have taken a vow walk on the fire part of the ritual. The main jatre is held around the time of Sankranti in January.
The main temple here, which is quite ancient, is in the typical Dakshina Kannada style constructed with stone, wood and tiles.
A few hours spent at this small (and usually not crowded) place is a refreshing spiritual experience amidst nature. A walk in and around the place is an exciting experience as you are amidst thick greenery.
