Beat Street

R&B and ballads clash at the music stand this week

Beyonce

B'Day

Beyonce/SonyBMG

The R&B sensation returns with her second solo studio album come September 5, which is when the ex Destiny's Child will also celebrate her 25th birthday. For the album that she wrapped up in record two weeks, Beyonce Knowles collaborated with Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, T.I., Rodney Jerkins, The Neptunes, Rich Harrison and Swizz Beatz. Already, the second single from the cover inched past Shakira's Hips Don't Lie by 20 steps on UK charts and is her 7th Top 5 hit in the US.

Rod Stewart

If We Fall in Love Tonight

Rod Stewart/Warner

Here's one for the mushy ballads from the artiste's 70s, 80s and 90s romantic rendition. Find here his versions of Leo Slayer and Dan Hill numbers— Stewart has been working on pop standards from the Great American Songbook written by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and others. Songs that are not found on those ballad compilations and few from his Storyteller collection can be found on this cover. If you have missed out on a copy of his earlier Thanks for the Memory: The Great American Songbook 4 featuring duets with Elton John and Diana Ross, this is one for you.
