Caring for the elderly
|
Be more considerate to the elderly in public areas, says Rosalind Herbert
|
I always wonder why senior citizens in India are not given a little more sympathy and consideration, especially in public places.
Is it because people feel India is a poor country so there is little resource to make the lives of older people more comfortable?
Whether it is in banks or post offices or even in hospitals, elderly people have to wait for hours in queues without any provision for physical comforts.
While it is almost unheard of shopping areas here catering to the senior citizens, the few who do provide wheel chairs have no attendants to run them.
The big shopping malls in the country should copy their Western counterparts and go in for the battery-operated scooters that even an old person can easily operate. I have used one in Sydney at a shopping centre and had a good time.
I hope the day is not too far off when even the older members of society can shop and have fun!
