Enjoy the solitude of Devbagh

ENCHANTING SIGHT The silhouette of a fishing boat
The Devbagh Beach Resort in Karwar is all one can imagine and more. The place seems to have come out of someone's sketchbook. Just make a few additions to the familiar image of hillocks with thick green trees, a flowing river, and a boat that seems to be headed towards the horizon.
The waters have a mix of the Kali and the Arabian Sea. Various fish and corals abound in the waters. A wide range of birds from brahminy kites, sandpipers, gulls, terns, swifts and kingfishers can be spotted. Dolphins are often seen when on a cruise in summer; a visual delight that tourists miss out on in the monsoon. The island itself is thick with casuarina trees.
Accommodation is available at log huts and cottages of the Devbagh Beach Resort that dot the island. Activities such as water sports and snorkelling are available at an additional cost, at the resort and in the season. But just try lying on a hammock and watching the sea through the gaps between the trees. Long walks on the beach are ideal and in low tide one can walk a considerable distance into the sea. Playing volleyball on the beach court is another option. If rain plays spoil sport, find refuge in chess and carom at the indoor activities centre.
Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is served at the resort. The ideal time to visit is between October and May. The popularity of the resort is evident, with it being booked completely even during the off-season.
Getting there: Devbagh is a three-kilometre boat ride from Karwar. Karwar is a five-hour drive from Mangalore. Fast trains do not stop at Karwar; so one has to alight at Madgaon (Goa) or at Ankola and then reach Karwar by road. However, quite a few of the slower trains stop at Karwar. The beach package at Devbagh costs Rs.1,900 per night. Tariff for children aged between five and 12 years is 50 per cent and is complimentary for those aged below five. For reservations contact Devbagh Beach Resort, Kodibagh, opposite Hotel Bhadra, Karwar or email devbagh@junglelodges.com or call 08382 221603/94495 99765. Also visit www.junglelodges.
