Dussehra celebrations from September 8 to 17
|
DakshinaChitra is all set to celebrate Dussehra from September 8 to 17 at DakshinaChitra, Muttukadu. This festival finds its roots in the legend of the Ramayana, and in Tamil Nadu, it is an occasion to honour the women of the household. The theme, therefore, is shakti (power) and sringar (beauty).
As part of the celebrations dollu kunita folk artistes will perform on all the nine days. The dollu kunita is a popular drum dance of the State performed by the men of the shepherd community. Acrobatic movements and attractive formations are the highlights. The men have large drums decorated with colourful cloth slung from their necks. They go about beating the drums as they dance. The dance is at times accompanied by songs which are either religious or in praise of a war.
There will be a golu in all the heritage houses at DakshinaChitra with a traditional welcome. The crafts shop will display a range of illkal saris, silver and pearl jewellery, bidriware, Chennapatna toys, Mysore and Chittara paintings. Also on display will be lambani embroidered products and beauty products. Visitors can savour Karnataka cuisine at the Kanali restaurant.
