Chords `n' Notes

Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy rock yet again like they've done in Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya. For Don, their task is more difficult - to not offend old timers who've grown up listening to the original Don and at the same time make it appealing for the Gen-X. We won't discuss the album in chronological order. We'll tell you what you want to hear the most.

Khaike Paan Baras Waala is back, minus the baritone of Amitabh Bachchan. The new Don stars Shah Rukh Khan and Udit Narayan does a fine job of rendering the song to suit Khan. Khan himself breaks into an effortless, catchy limerick. You'll like it if you aren't fixated on the original. Yeh Mera Dil takes prime space in the album as well, and Sunidhi Chauhan tries her best to recreate the magic. The song as such doesn't tamper with the original but lacks punch.

Now for the rest: Shaan gives Main Hoon Don a whole new techno feel. And the Don instrumental theme - international mix - tells you that the new-age Don is more up-to-the-minute, international and is techno-savvy. The composer trio score brownie points for Aaj Ki Raat sung by Alisha Chinoy, Sonu Nigam and Mahalaxmi. Music of the 70s blends comfortably with present day beats. Finally, the album closes with the superb Mouriya Re by Shankar Mahadevan. Shankar's spirited rendering and is ably complemented by snazzy beats. No wonder the song is a favourite in most Ganesh Chaturti pandals.
