With a number of long weekends in the offing, here's a holiday planner

This is for those who rue about not taking off on a quick holiday during the extended weekend prior thanks to Independence Day and Janmastami, and also for those who've managed a holiday and yet want more. The latter half of the year is the best time for short holidays - a visit home for those who're living on their own, or simply a weekend getaway with friends. Employers may forgive us for helping your staff plan their vacation. Think of it; such vacations translate to happier staff and better production thereafter.

Coming up in a month's time are the Puja holidays, on September 30 and October 1 - Saturday and Sunday. Club that with Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 and you get three days off. If you are a smart planner and have a friendly HR team, you can take just a couple of days off, combine that with the declared holidays and get a cool week off. "A number of my friends, including me, pack our bags home or head off on a vacation. It's refreshing. Companies understand this and don't mind if we take the Friday preceding the holiday off too," says K.J. Srinivasan, a HR consultant, who recently took a holiday to Mysore and Jog falls.

Prasanna D, a content developer with a leading MNC, says, "I have friends in the corporate sector and in the media. Not everyone gets a spate of holidays through the year. So last year we grouped up, took a few days off and headed to the backwaters of Kerala. We are deciding on where to go this year for the puja holidays."

If you haven't booked your tickets yet, act now. A number of tickets have already been purchased on low fare airlines and you'll be left to pay higher rates as the days go by. "The number of enquiries and purchase of tickets have increased owing to the prospect of these short holidays. These months are the busiest times for us," says S. Ram Patil, who runs a travel agency in Ameerpet.
