The Mush Register

V. G. Swaminathan

The style of functioning in the Government office I was working in was incompatible with my principles. She encouraged me to turn in my papers and strike out on my own. It was the early 1950s, I entered a taxi business with cars like Ford Prefect and Hindustan 14. She assisted me in an extraordinary manner. On occasions, she would spend the whole day overseeing mechanics repairing the cars. When I think of those days, one strong image comes to mind — with a hawk's eye, Sharada would watch the radiators being cleaned. Those days the radiators were made of brass and copper and were rugged. They were burnt so that the scaling would be dislodged.

Sharada Swaminathan

After we gave up the taxi business, he sought an accountant's job in Easun Engineering. But he was offered a top position in the purchase department. He was mystified and told the management that he had little experience in this area and would do better as an accountant. He learnt the company had made discreet enquiries about him and they had found out about his high moral standards. The company needed such conscientious, scrupulous men in the purchase department. He has been lauded for his integrity wherever he worked, and I am proud of him.
