FREE VERSE An element of pathos runs through Mary Annie's poems
Although there is nothing poetic in her work or work environment, Mary Annie, an employee of the University of Kerala, is a poet. Her job among dusty files and paper did not dampen her yen for poetry.
Her maiden collection of poems `My Beads Unstrung,' written under the pseudonym Anna Maria, will be released on September 13.
Written on an impulse
The book is being published by Poetree Garden, an eco-literary organisation of staff members of the University of Kerala.
She says, "Most of my poems were written on an impulse, like unstrung beads that fall and disperse in no special order."
She adds, "I come from a family of avid readers and I used to participate in all poetry competitions right from my school days."
Her first poem on her younger brother won her a prize in the Shankar's International Competition. This poem was later published in The Illustrated Weekly of India. Many of her poems have been published in the Mirror magazine.
As a student of Government Women's College, Thiruvanathapuram, she had represented her college in reciting short poems in All India Radio (AIR). After her studies, she compeered English programmes for `Yuvavani,' a youth-oriented segment on AIR. She used to write the script for the programme. For about a decade, she anchored the western music segment of AIR in the city.
Mary's poems are in free verse, as she says she hates to categorise them. A few Haikus also figure in her collection.
An element of pathos runs through her poems. Mary's poems have earned recognition and criticism from many online poetry sites such as Trinas Poetry Forum, Today's Women Net and so on.
