Trek through the Thar desert or go on a Nature tour to the Andaman Islands

SEA OF SAND A six-day desert trek begins form Jaisalmer

Want to explore the mystique of the desert? Then join the `Desert Trekking and Camel Safari Expedition at Jaisalmer - 2006,' organised by The Youth Hostels Association of India, Tamil Nadu State branch. Under the programme, five groups will set out on a six-day trek from September 24 to October 3. The first group will report on September 24 and the last on September 28. Participation is open to all educational institutions, individuals and recognised YHAI units. The strength of a group will be limited to 50 and each member will have to bear all travel expenses from their place to the base camp and back. The fee is Rs. 2,300, which includes simple vegetarian food, accommodation, supervision, expert guidance, a camel safari and equipment for six days. Booking is only on a first-cum-first-served basis.

Those interested in participating should send their bio-data along with a bank draft for Rs. 2,300 favouring YHAI, Tamil Nadu State Branch by September 15 and mail it to Youth Hostels Association of India, Tamil Nadu State Branch, 2-D, Viswas Flats, Pillaiyar Koil Street, Nesapakkam, West K.K. Nagar. Participants below the age of 15 will have to provide a consent letter from their parents.

The base camp for the programme is at the Border Home Guards ground, Jaisalmer, 2 km from the bus stand and 4 km from the railway station. Those who complete the trek and abide by the discipline of the programme will be awarded certificates. There is a bonus for a teacher or group leader accompanying 15 students/individuals, as he/she is exempt from paying the participation fee.

Andaman attraction

YHAI is also organising a 10-day `Nature and Eco Study Tour to the Andaman Islands' till the end of December 2006 and between January-March 2007. Participation fee is as follows: a/c bunk class Rs. 7,500; a/c second class cabin Rs. 12,500 and a/c first class cabin Rs. 13,500. The fee includes travel from Chennai to Port Blair and back, accommodation, food during he journey and at Port Blair, all sightseeing expenses, entry tickets and local transport.
