Car and bike questions? We have the answers
I already own an Accent, which I am very happy with and am now looking to buy a second car, mostly for city use. Can you suggest which would be the best bet for me from the Swift, Getz, Santro, Wagon R and Indica Xeta?
Dr T Ramchandran
Since you are a Hyundai owner and a happy one at that, there is no reason not to opt for another car from the same manufacturer. While the Maruti Swift is a peppy performer and the Santro an extremely easy car to drive through city traffic, the Getz, with its roomy interiors, good ride and quality build should be the choice for you.
I need a car that's really low on maintenance costs and converts the ownership experience into the least amount of money per kilometre. The car will essentially be driven by me and should seat five. I can spare about Rs 5 lakh. Any ideas?
Veera Prabhu
Given all your parameters, we feel the Maruti Esteem suits you best. It fits your budget and is easy to drive and maintain. Rear seat passengers, however, will feel a little cramped. If rear seat comfort is extremely important, then the Getz is the best choice here. Of course, the Esteem will beat the Hyundai for luggage space and will cost you less money per kilometre in maintenance costs - rear seat comfort or a big boot and slightly cramped seating behind - the choice is yours to make!
For a family of four and a budget of Rs 8.25 lakh, which is a good diesel car? I will be taking it along on long and short drives.
Vinayaka Shastri
For this price, the best diesel in the market is the Fiesta. As a driver, you will enjoy its precise steering and slick gearshift. And ride is the best in its class; ideal for your family. While it's well suited for urban living, you might find the diesel lacking performance on the highway with a family and their luggage. Yet, it's still the best diesel within your budget right now.
I own a Honda Activa that I would like to maintain really well. I love its acceleration and the smooth manner it delivers power. What worries me are the roads around home - they are in poor condition and I am worried about my bike. What should I do?
Anmol Kin, via email
First of all, see that your tyres are always inflated to the recommended tyre pressure. Next, keep your bike clean - bikes usually run a lot better when they are not dirty! Ride slowly through potholes and bumps, keeping a steady throttle and not accelerating or braking abruptly - in the long run, all this will pay off in terms of the life on your machine.
