Just for fast bowlers
Nike has launched Air Zoom Yorker, "a shoe made exclusively for fast bowlers." The shoe "underwent an elaborate design and testing process" that spanned three years.
"In 2003, the Nike Sports Research Lab (NSRL), studied New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond and all-rounder Jeff Wilson to ascertain the various positions players move through when they bowl and bat. It was noted how each movement translated to the foot and ankle. The results of these biomechanical studies were given to footwear designer Kevin Hoffer, who created the first prototype of the Air Zoom Yorker. In 2004, this sample was sent to the University of Auckland and this meant revisions and refinements to the design. By 2005, the shoe began to be put through a long wear testing process conducted in different cricket playing countries. Cricketers used it on the pitch in the multitude of conditions they usually encounter and gave their feedback."
Recently, the shoe was launched at the Taj Coromandel, with fast bowlers Sreesanth and Shane Bond lending glitz to the event. Each was wearing a pair of shoes that cost Rs. 8,900. Chris Cook, senior developer at Nike, clarified, "The Air Zoom Yorker comes at a price range. It is for all cricketers, not just elite cricketers."
The Air Shoe Yorker is said to be just half the weight of the standard cricket shoe. Also available is the Air Zoom Opener "a similar performance innovation for batsmen." Air Zoom Yorker and Opener will be available in the Indian market by September 15, this year.
