Singing a different tune

Usha Uthup, the diva of Indian pop music, is making her screen debut in a Malayalam film "Pothenvava," due for release on October 20. She plays Mariamma, a reputed lawyer who tries to reform her wayward son, played by Mammootty. The film has a lot of sentiment. Usha says: "What made me accept this film was the combination of a strong role and a near perfect script. I play a Catholic woman married to a Brahmin and the film is about national integration — a subject close to my heart." The buzz is that she has also crooned a song in the film.
