Daisy's achievement

I like MetroPlus for the informative articles that appear in it. Recently, I read the Woman of the Week column featuring Daisy Victor ("75, and still running", September 23). What I liked about the article was it gave an insight into Ms. Victor's achievements in the field of sports without any exaggeration.

In this connection, I wish to tell you that when I was in-charge of the Madras Telephones Trunk Exchange during 1982-86, Ms. Victor was a supervisor.

She was already a renowned sportsperson and had won several medals. Yet, she was very unassuming and polite.

Informative articles

I look forward to every issue of MetroPlus which carries informative articles on a wide range of topics. Especially interesting are those that appear in Escape, Wellness and Wheels pages. I also like to read the Voice Your Views column which features the views of a cross-section of people about a particular topic. On the whole, the supplement is a feast to the eyes and the mind.

Adopt them

The article ("Our best friends?", September 26) made dog lovers like me feel relieved. I hope hereafter there won't be any fear of stray dogs. I live alone in a remote area. I have two dogs at home and feed two stray dogs. One night, when a thief tried to break into my house, these dogs chased him away. How is it possible to kill the dogs that have protected me for so long?

There is a notion that stray dogs spread infections. According to Dr. R. Jayaprakash (quoted in the article), this fear is unfounded. He has also suggested vaccinating and sterilising them instead of killing them.

Here, I would like to suggest that instead of going in for expensive breeds we can start adopting strays. They are as good as any other breed and can also be trained.

In Japan, the police have been training stray dogs which are successfully used in their work.
