The long-running thriller series on Sony TV, "CID" will soon be serialised as a children's comic

NOW, IN A BOOK The CID team
CID, one of the longest running serials on Indian television, will soon be available in the form of children's comic books.
A popular episodic thriller on Sony TV, which involves a team of police officials led by the main character, ACP Pradyuman who solve a slew of murder mysteries and other crimes, CID will complete 10 years this January. To mark the occasion, both the channel and its production house, Fireworks Productions, came up with this idea.
Explains Yash Patnaik, Business Head, Fireworks Productions, "Though CID is meant for all, our research has found that it is quite popular with children.
Also, the trend of comics worldwide has been either thrillers or horror stories. In India too, our research says it works. So we thought the best way to bring the serial and children on one platform is to turn it into a comic book series."
Patnaik says all the characters of the serial, particularly ACP Pradyuman (played by Shivaji Satam) and inspector Daya (played by Dayanand Shetty), are quite a hit with children. The comic books are likely to hit the stands only after two or three months.
Patnaik says CID has aired 400 stories already and there are another 3000 in the bank.
"For every one story, we reject six stories. That is how we work, and so there is no dearth of stories," he says, adding that some changes would, however, feature in the comic book version.
"Take for instance, scenes like mid-air robbery. It is quite difficult to shoot such a scene in the audio-visual medium, but it would not be difficult to show it in print."
The producers would not like to take away the viewers' attention from the serial, and so it will turn only the aired stories into comic strips. The comics will initially be in Hindi and English, but there is a plan to publish them in other regional languages.
