Abu Malik has composed the music for the just-released English film, American Blend. And this makes Abu, the brother of Bollywood music director Anu Malik, open his innings in film music direction.

Directed by Varun Khanna, American Blend features hip-hop Punjabi numbers. The plot of the movie depicts what can go right when culturally diverse families come together in redefining new America. So Abu's music demanded a strong Indian appeal.

The Indian touch

In New Delhi the other day to talk about this debut, Abu elaborates, "Since the movie is related to Indians, the music is very much Indian.

The movie has Punjabi songs and even a Kathak rap." Son of legendary music director, Sardar Malik, whose contribution to Bollywood music is reminded by songs like "Saranga teri yaad main", Abu says he has as many as 3000 stage shows to his credit. "My latest stage show was Zee Astitva Awards this past August," he adds. Claiming that his stage shows aredifferent, he explains, "My kind of music shows are unique. It comes as a visual surprise. I put all my heart and soul into my work. The International Film Festival (held in Mumbai) was entirely done by me and the appreciation could be felt."

In American Blend, singers Sonu Nigam, Sukhwinder Singh, Abhijeet and Daler Mehndi have sung under his direction. Abu too has contributed as a singer to the film's soundtrack. And not just singing, Abu has featured as an actor too. In the film, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, he played the role of Anjala Zaveri's father. "Working in the movie was a nice experience. I will also be in another movie `My Punjabi Nikah'. Any field of art is good to me," sums up Abu.
