Acid test

War specialist J. P. Dutta ("Border", "LOC") is the next to try his hand at remakes. Dutta has made the 1981 Muzaffar Ali hit "Umrao Jaan" with the same title. Aishwarya Rai plays the role made memorable by Rekha in the original. She is a courtesan in a Lucknow kotha who falls in love with a Nawab, played by Abhishek Bachchan, and wants to marry him. The others in this period drama are Shabana Azmi and Suniel Shetty. Anu Malik has come out with music that takes one back to the past. Javed Akhtar has penned great lyrics that have been rendered well by Alka Yagnik. For Ash, "Umrao Jaan" is an acid test. Last week, while in Chennai, she said: "`Umrao Jaan' is a special experience for me. I consider it a privilege to play the role that Rekha had become famous for and I am lucky to be spoken about in the same breath as her." The film is slated for release on November 2.
