He is all of nine yet he handles the strings of the veena with expertise. Mahadevan Sriram is set to charm the audience with the notes from his veena at Municipal Hall on October 28 at 6 p.m., as part of the Soorya festival.
Child prodigy
A class four student at Shanthineketan, Mahadevan started learning the veena when he was four from his grandmother M. Lalitha, a veena player herself. Lalitha, a former gold medallist in veena, noticed his interest in the instrument when he was a tot.
"He enjoyed listening to Carnatic music and his grandmother playing the veena. We caught him trying to play the veena and the rest as they say is history. His first stage performance was at the Navarathri festival at the age of five. Since then, he has participated in various music and temple festivals," says Mahadevan's father, Sriram M.
Says Lalitha, "He has a ear for music. He can replicate a tune if he hears it once." And Mahadevan, who has good vocals and also plays the violin, says his amibition is to be , "A Carnatic musician."
