My kind of place - Shivkumar Sharma

Part of my music and me

Bharat's mastak (India's forehead), mera janmasthan (my birthplace) and jannat dharti par (paradise on earth), that's Jammu and Kashmir — my kind of place. Though far away in Mumbai, I am still a mountain man and my music reverberates with the pahadi flavour.

Growing up years

I remember as a young boy spending summers in Kashmir and winters in Jammu. On one side of our house was River Tawi and on the other Trikuta mountains. I would often take my santoor to the terrace and play my favourite ragas sitting under a star-lit sky. It was particularly fascinating to watch the mountain and the river bathed in blue on full moon nights. And what a joy it was to hear in the quite of the night the folk tunes emanating from the temple situated in the village across the river.

The great stop-over

During our travels from Jammu to Srinagar, we would always make a brief stop-over at Kud, on the highway, to admire Nature in its full glory — snow-capped mountains, the cover of greenery, the sounds of birds, the cool breeze... it's beyond description. Even today, when I go to Jammu, I never miss taking a good look at Kud.

Kashmir ka kya kehna

The Valley offers a completely different vista. I can never forget my stay in Vanihal, which is almost the entry point to Kashmir. My brother-in-law's house was located on the outskirts. You could only see tall trees all around. I would practise for hours sitting under the trees. No hi-tech soundproof studio can match this serenity. I think the training in Nature's lap has made me what I am today.

The ultimate experience

The shadow of the snow-clad mountain in the deep blue waters of the lake in Seshnag, which is on the way to Amarnath is a sight that's etched in my mind.
