Just six -- Cyrus Dastur
`Theatre can be impromptu'
Cyrus Dastur
A playwright, a director, a qualified lawyer and a financial analyst, Cyrus Franroz Dastur has his fingers in many pies. He talks about juggling his love for all his ventures and more. His current production will tour the city once again next week.
The play: The play, When God Says Cheers has been running for almost four years. It's probably the longest running play in the country and I can proudly say that it has been quite successful. The sequel to this play, And Now She Says She's God has also been well received. When this play started out, it was just a small production that began in a coffee house.
Theatre in India: There is scope for theatre in India. Even a play like this, even though it has been around for so long, there is so much scope for it. Theatre is more spontaneous and has a better connection with real life than movies.
Directing more plays: When the opportunity arises, I would love to direct plays more often. This play was written by a close friend- Anurag Kashyap with inputs from all of us. The best part about theatre is that it can be impromptu. Even for this play, we improvise on the spur of the moment and if it works well, we just incorporate it into the play.
On taking the play international: There is a lot of scope for taking this play abroad as it has a universal appeal but the number of shows we do in the country itself are so many. There are also other logistics involved and the entire cast should be willing and able to do the production internationally.
As a financial analyst: That's something I love doing as well. I will continue to do this alongside theatre.
Putting his feet up: When you do what you love, there is nothing like relaxing or unwinding. When you are so passionate about what you do, nothing seems like work. It's like I'm being paid to do what I like to do.
