KITSCH AND MORE Kedar Maddula at Wundershop

What he does to natural fabrics with block prints et al is heavenly, fashion buffs would agree. His new photo prints jackets and recyclable bags only go on to add to the list. An alumni of NIFT, Hyderabad (from the first batch) designer Kedar Maddula has quite a few laurels to his credit, including his self-titled label that is a rage with foreigners. Reason? He has the ability to make bright colours appear elegant and his retro silhouettes are never the in-your-face types.

Starting as an apprentice to Rocky S, following it up with his stint at Weekender and later tinselville— a costume for Morning Raaga, Kedar comes full circle with his Wundershop. Located on Road No.4, Banjara Hills, the designer boutique packs in ample fun. Fluorescent walls with photo prints, antique radio sets from Charminar, draped egg holders and other kitsch collectibles on the mantle under the bright light makes haute shopping here less intimidating. Recycled bags made with colourful potato wafers' packets and snug cushions are teasers of what this place holds. "Dresses are my USP," says the designer pointing to a row of loungewear collection. "They are doing well in Mumbai where I retail them," he adds.

Most familiar with Kedar's work will find the same linen and cotton silhouettes in contemporary cuts at Wunderlust. "Whites and comfort fits with hand block prints are in vogue in men's wear," he says. "Sporty look with casual jackets in denim is the new accessory for men. Printed shirts are in vogue after the trend started by actor Nagarjuna," says Kedar.

For girls, organdie skirts with flounce, spaghetti printed tops, short skirts, jackets and kurtis are some of the options to choose from. "Girlie romantic element and feminity are in vogue," he says. Apart from his lines, Kedar is also promoting local designers. Sunaina and Deepti's Suede is a case in point. "I would like the studio to be a window for local designers and artists who have some creative work to display," says Kedar. Drop in for a dekko.
