Mast boy reinvents himself

Will reinvention work for Aftab Shivdasani?

CHOCOLATE BOY NEXT DOOR Aftab Shivdasani
Sometimes, all it takes is a haircut and a little time out to reinvent yourself.
Ask Aftab Shivdasani, the Mast boy. Sporting dark shades and a perfect shave, the chocolate boy looks every bit the Bollywood actor with his sense of style.
We begin asking him about his idea of fashion . "I've never really been a brand person," he admits. "Fashion signifies comfort and confidence. I slip into whatever I feel I'm comfortable in, whatever I can carry off. And when I feel comfortable, I make a style statement."
New look
So, we ask him about his new look. "It's all for my career ," says the jinxed actor. Most of his films have sunk without a trace but Aftab seems determined to hang on.
His next release Red just might be what he's been waiting for. "I had chopped my hair very short for Red. It's an intense thriller with Celina and I. It's a dark role. Not a negative one," he's quick to clarify.
"It requires a radical change to my personality. So I decided to chop my hair off . I don't think I've looked better in all my life," he says.
Aftab has three releases in early 2007.
After Red in January, he has De Taali in February and Sometimes Life Mein in April.
"De Taali is with E Niwas. It's got me and Ritiesh Deshmukh, Ayesha Takia and Rimii Sen. Sometimes Life Mein is an emotional story about five friends."
Aftab walked in with a lot of promise, yet never really made it. Why?
Candid talk
"I just played it by ear. I never really planned much. But till date, my work has not been criticised. It's just that the films have not done well. But, I think it's directly related to the success at the box office, bang or no bang, promise or no promise."
"There was a phase in my life between 2004 and 2005 when I sat at home reading a lot of scripts. I had to re-assess my career and reinvent myself. I wanted to take some time off to see what happens."
