Virtual Mechanic

My mechanic tells me I should use undiluted coolant in my Wagon R. Is this true? Also, I've only been getting 15kpl, and that with the air-con off. How do I improve this?

Rohan Sharma, via email

Go by the owner's manual. If it says, "use diluted coolant", then you know what to do. Typically, however, undiluted coolant is be used only in extremely hot or cold weather, or if the car is under severe, constant stress. Frankly, 15kpl is very respectable, if you've given us the overall figure. If it's your highway mileage, then you could improve it, but not by much.

Can a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo engine be fitted into an Indian Lancer?

Rishab Jain, via email

Yes, it sounds like great fun and we know people who have successfully managed the transplant, but let us tell you, the job isn't easy or cheap! And to deal with the new, bumped-up engine, you'll need new suspension bits, a new rear axle, better brakes and so on. In fact, the body shell is pretty much the only thing you won't have to change. Plus, you'll have to find a good race shop with the know-how to do this.

I want a scooter as a daily runabout. Fuel economy doesn't bother me. I just want good looks and performance. I have shortlisted the Kinetic Nova, Honda Activa and Honda Dio. The Activa performs well but looks plain and I don't know much about the Dio. I like the Nova though.

Manish R, via email

The Activa is the hot favourite at the moment, and the Dio is virtually the same machine in a more trendy fibre body. It's the scooter to go for if you like futuristic styling. One downside to the Dio is the downward-sloping footboard, which can be a bit uncomfortable. Do not expect as-good fuel economy or refinement from the Nova as from the two Hondas. We suggest you test the Activa and the Dio and choose between the two.
