`Flash the card' and `record the sound' were the keywords at the `My smart baby' programme launched by Aspire Superkidz for mothers of infants between three and 48 months. The idea was to train mothers to activate the right brain of a child in its formative years.

Honing memory skills

According to G.M. Paulraj, who conducted the training programme, "Hidden in the right brain is the ability to develop photographic memory, creativity, intuitiveness and self-conscious awareness. The programme focuses on activating the photographic memory right from the foetus stage."

Teaching tools

Mothers were taught to gradually introduce various concepts to infants only a few months old. Cards designed with pictures, words, and dots representing numbers are used in this teaching method. When these cards are shown to the infant in a systematic fashion, it is believed that he or she can easily learn and remember it. "The child registers information shown in the cards as images, but does not analyse or interpret it. He is able to use the right brain to photographically remember the numbers and words," he adds.

The programme is based on researched modules around the world and has been customised to Indian context. Activating the photographic memory during infancy is believed to lay a strong foundation for future success in school and life. Research has shown that such learning programmes also help a child get conversant with math.

Flash cards

The teaching method is simple. A photograph is flashed accompanied by sound. This way, neuro-connections are established between visual and auditory perceptions in the child. "Memory is all about neuro-connections. By activating this important neurological pathway, other creative capabilities in the child are also enhanced," Paulraj explains.

Mothers will have to shuffle the cards everyday and help the child discover its abilities.

The training also aims to find answers to questions like `How can I develop my child's creativity and problem solving skills?' `How to improve the child's visual and auditory memory?' and ` How the left and right brain hemispheres function?' and `How to develop my child's self esteem and confidence?'

A fun-filled learning

"To pursue any passion, there has to be joy. The bonding brings happiness and the mother becomes the role model. The training requires less than three minutes a day," Paulraj says and adds that if the right inputs are given at this stage, a child would enjoy learning newer things every day.

The next training session of `My smart baby programme' will be conducted in Coimbatore on November 14. For details, call: 92444-06117.
