Metro becomes retro

Sing a dirge for the metrosexual. Sporty masculinity is in. The recent Lakme Fashion Week defined the look of the season and men's fashion comes a full circle

HOT COUTURE The Lakme Fashion Week forecast a fresh, urbane style for men

Masculinity is in. And this was evident in the lines showcased at the recent Lakme Fashion Week held at Mumbai. If getting in touch with the feminine side was the flavour some seasons ago, the sporty, outdoor and innovative elements combine to present the suave Spring Summer 2007 look for the male this time around.

"There are reminiscence of what men's fashion has gone through, but the current look is a masculine view and new silhouette," says Narendra Kumar, whose tongue-in-cheek take on current art scene in the country, The Artist Inside, received rave reviews.

The complete man

After working with the complete man look for Raymond, Reid and Taylor and more, the NIFT Delhi designer presented clothing inspired by camouflage prints and Cubism for his casual, day and evening wear.

If his casual western wear got a sporty edge with detailing, usage of Indian elements such as the Aligarhi pyjama were equally haute.

Taking the sporty look forward was Stanza with its refreshing presentation of Spring Summer 2007 featuring mix of fabrics, colours and styles for weekend casuals, classic formals and party wear.

Proper categorisation

"Today men have wardrobe designed for occasions. Men's fashion is getting into proper categorisation today which is a good thing for men's wear," explained Shridhar Iyer, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Stanza, as he explained the new international notes that the collection brings. Formal poly wools and cotton trousers, casual linens for trousers teamed with pastels and printed shirts, the latter to set in the party mood comprised on the Stanza forecast for the forthcoming season.

In formal wear, the season ahead holds a good share of stripes while checks are no more in fashion. But the emphasis is more on the structure — the weave and feel of the fabric.

A sizzling summer

Drapes and sheer fabrics in women's wear caught the eyes of shutterbugs as layered fabric made its foray this time into men's formal line.

With designer labels for men planning to take up improvisation of fits and detailing in the next season, prêt comes full circle next and the summer is sure going to sizzle.

"Men today are willing to experiment with pink and green stripes and rust orange. They are not just daring to experiment but are able to carry off the style statement with élan," said designer Sashikant Naidu.
