FABLES REVISITED One of the paintings on view
The Panchatantra, the Tutinama and Aesop's fables come alive in "The Dream of an Inhabitant of Mogul," an exhibition of miniature paintings by Iman Bakshish Lahori at the Alliance Française of Madras (AFM) Gallery. The paintings illustrate the famous collection of poems Fables, written by Jean de la Fontaine at the end of the 17th Century.
This exhibition is the realisation of a dream born in the 18th Century, when Baron Bastien Félix Feuillet de Conches, an art collector and an Anglophile with a passion for history and La Fontaine, dreamt of constituting an international collection of the Fables. The resultant collection is considered the most beautiful production of the Lahori School under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and the jewel of the Musée Jean de La Fontaine in France.
Jean de La Fontaine never set foot in the India of his fables and the Baron Bastien Félix Feuillet de Conches never travelled to the India of his precious miniatures, but the collection of paintings has found its way to the land of its inspiration with this exhibition at Alliance Francaise, which is on till November 18.
