They are all in their 40s. They have been in Delhi at some point of their youth and they all tell you that they felt a sense of homecoming the minute they stepped into the Fabindia store in Coimbatore. "For those of us who wouldn't or couldn't wear jeans and tight tops, Fabindia salwar kurtas were the answer," says Savithri as she happily takes in the welcoming ambience of Coimbatore's newest store.

Old world

The place has something more going for it. It is housed in an INTACH certified building at least a 100 years old! Chettinad pillars hold up the front and an uruli with flowers urges you to cross over the threshold. There is always something to be said of the vibes in a gracious old home. And, as heritage lovers will agree, at least one more house is saved from dilapidation this way.

Welcome to the 51st addition to the Fabindia fold. The rest of its family is spread the length and breadth of the country and abroad in Rome, Dubai, UAE and Guangzhou in China.

Stepping in, one is immediately enveloped by warm colours and a fragrance one can't quite put a finger to. Everything smells spanking new and after the first few moments of having your eyes dart here and there and everywhere, you slow down and take stock of what is actually there. There are 2,200 sq feet of shopping area you have to cover in two levels.

Bedspreads, cushion covers, towels, table linen, curtains and beautiful durries — all handcrafted by artisans from the length and breadth of the country. Who needs anything imported?

To give you an idea of how you could transform your bedroom into a warm and welcoming space, a futon covered with a fluffy mattress and bright counterpane and a scattering of colourful cushions has been placed in a corner.

A wooden breakfast-tray rests on top of the bed. For those kids who may be reading this, that is exactly what you need to get your mom for Mother's Day, with breakfast thrown in of course!

Go pottery!

Cereal bowls, coffee mugs in happy colours and salad bowls arrange themselves prettily on the shelves along with beautiful pottery jars in fire engine red and a pleasing moss green.

Photograph frames, lamp bases and shades, flower vases and trays packed with organic goodies make for great gift ideas. Gift vouchers starting upwards of Rs 250 are also available.

Wardrobe ideas

A stairway snakes up and as you go up the wooden treads it is with a sense of blissful anticipation.

Clothes occupy the upper floor, that is why! Kurtas in stripes, checks, florals, plains, straight cut, with panels (kalidaar), short, long and medium length and in sizes that will fit you no matter how long or short, fat or thin you are.

Create your ensemble

None of the matched sets for you here. You mix and match and create your ensemble in any way you want. You can pickup traditional tops to wear with your funkiest jeans or go in for some gorgeously block printed skirts. Tussar saris glow delicately on one side, while dupattas, stoles and elegant evening bags tempt you from yonder.

Men and kids there is something for you too. Two entire sections is devoted to you with pyjamas, kurtas, shirts, trousers, skirts etc., in all colours, shapes and sizes.

Coimbatoreans can look forward to great ethnic wear for themselves and their homes and to interesting exhibitions Fabindia is known to hold every now and then.

The store is open all days of the week between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Fabindia is located at No. 152, T.V. Samy Road (West), R.S. Puram. Call 0422-4370103 or 4370107 for details.
