Smooth jazz show

Chennai will host for the first time in the country a live smooth jazz concert featuring some of the well-known names in the Indian music industry, on December 9, 6.30 p.m., at the Museum Theatre, Egmore. The concert is the brainchild of Shyam Benjamin, one of Chennai's most talented young composers and pianists.

Shyam is a fan of the smooth jazz genre and will be an integral part of the main band as pianist/ keyboardist. Smooth jazz as a concept has caught the fancy of audiences the world over. It combines traditional jazz with stylistic influences drawn Latin, funk, R&B, pop and world music.

The band includes Shyam, Deepak Purushottaman (drums), `Darbuka' Siva (percussion), Aalaap Raju (bass), Donan Murray (guitar), Thomas (trumpet) and Mathew (saxophone). The concert will feature guest performances by such as Sunitha Sarathy (vocals) and Keith Peters (bass) along with a performance by Augustine Paul and his group (vocals).

The concert is being held in association with the Ebenezer Home of Social Outreaches, a non-profit organisation which runs an orphanage in Chennai. Part of the proceeds will be donated to this organisation. Tickets priced at Rs. 1,000, Rs. 500, Rs. 200 and Rs. 100, are available at Landmark, Music India, Adyar, Promusicals, Egmore, Musee Musicals, Anna Salai, The Fruit Ship (Kellys, Greams Road and Besant Nagar) and Lakshman Shruti Musicals, Ashok Nagar.
