Kanger National Park
The Kanger National Park, a biosphere reserve, derives its name from the Kanger river that flows through it.
The area was declared a National Park in 1982.
Apart from the flora and fauna, the stalactite and stalagmite caves of Kutamsar, Kailash and Dandak are a major attraction here as are the spectacular Tirathgarh waterfalls.
The Park is a must visit for wildlife enthusiasts and anthropologists (the park has a sizeable tribal population).

200 sq km
Flora
Sal, teak and bamboo are in predominance at the National Park.
It is one of the last surviving virgin forests in Peninsular India.
Fauna
The forests have a rich haul of animals, reptiles and birds that include tiger, leopard, mouse deer, wild cat, chital, sambar, barking deer, jackal, langur, rhesus macaque, sloth bear, flying squirrel, wild boar, striped hyena, rabbit, python, cobra, crocodile and the monitor lizard.
Birds
The hill mynah, spotted owlet, red jungle fowl, racket-tailed drongo, peacock, parrot, steppe eagle, red spur fall, phakta, bhura, teeter, tree pie and heron make up the bird population.
Best time to visit
Between November and June (forest guides are available and Nature trails inside the park are also organised by the Forest Department).
Nearest Airport: Raipur/Vishakapatnam (both approximately 325 km away). Buses and cabs are available to go to Jagdalpur, the district headquarters. The National Park is approximately 27 km from here.
Nearest railhead/bus stand: Jagdalpur District HQ.
