IN GAY ABANDON Dance your blues away on New Year eve

The most eagerly awaited event of the year is round the corner. The yearlong wait is finally over and people all over the metro seem to be geared to ring in the New Year in their own way.

Eat, drink and be merry seems to be the maxim of New Year revelry. The young at heart have a ball of a time going to the happening places and helping themselves with the choicest cuisine and drowning themselves in liquor. Some housewives and women, who do not want to be left behind in the race with their male counterparts, have their own way of celebrating the event.

Senior citizens prefer to remain indoors and watch the special programmes dished out by satellite TV channels through out the night. At the stroke of midnight revellers exchange greetings bidding adieu to the old year and welcoming the New Year. Mobile phones keep ringing continuously and landline phones are no different. It's a nightmare to reach your near and dear ones around midnight.

Youth go into a mad frenzy zooming past on their bikes and trying to shake hands with other motorists and pedestrians. Police personnel have a tough time controlling mischief-mongers.

The growth of apartments all over the city has given rise to a new culture. Residents, who rarely meet one another during the year, make it a point to utilise the opportunity to organise games and entertainment programmes either in the cellar or the terrace and involve all the families in the complex to participate in it.

With food-oriented programmes becoming more and more popular, hotels, restaurants and clubs go all out to dish out an array of lip-smacking cuisines, a wide choice of wines and variety entertainment programmes to hot up the chilly wintry night. The following are the events at some of the star hotels in the city.

The Park: Buoyed by the success of its programmes during the last three years the hotel is once again trying to recreate those sizzling moments with `Heaven `O' Seven'. Spirited dances by international performers from Sweden and dances by performers from Mumbai are expected to pep up the spirits of youth.

There will a special menu for food lovers to indulge in.

Daspalla: Music lovers can have some `masti' as Rock singer Samrat from Mumbai belts out some popular numbers. `Dragons', the dance troupe from Kolkata, will enliven the evening with their modern dances. Singer and Music director Sreelekha, anchor Anu will pep up the show.

Dolphin: `Midnite Wizards' promise unlimited fun, food and entertainment. Fashion and dance sequences by the Dream Merchant Blue group from Kolkata and track singer Charanjit Singh will pep up the mood of guests at the Dolphin's Garden. The other restaurants: Horizon, Pool Side and Front Lawn have also geared up to host games, entertainment programmes and the choicest cuisines for the guests.

Green Park: `Carribbean Nite - 2006' is the theme of this year's New Year festivities at the hotel. Mesmerizing mermaids, tastes and smells of the islands, backdrop of beaches and the beats of calypso promises to take guests on a dream trip to the Caribbean. `Immortals' from Mumbai would belt out thrilling dance and fashion sequences.

The Meadows Lawns would have the largest ever-multi-cuisine buffet with as many as 199 dishes extending to a length of 250 feet. Prizes such as flat TV s, Home Theatres and air tickets await the lucky winners.

WelcomHotel Grand Bay: The lucky guests can walk away with air tickets to their dream destinations like Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kaula Lumpur, Singapore and Colombo. There are prizes ranging from electronic items to gift vouchers and household gift items. DJ Bobsy will belt out pulsating music to keep the revellers on the dance floor through out the night and MC Puneet will entertain them with his wit and interactive games.

An array of authentic dishes promises to tickle the taste buds of food lovers.

Clubs and resorts also organise entertainment programmes to woo new members as also to promote their properties.
