Promising situation ahead

Robin Singh and Jadeja share their views on Indian team

MAKING THEIR POINTS Ajay Jadeja.

Former India star Robin Singh feels that the best development in Indian cricket was that players — both seniors and the new comers — were competing seriously for a slot in the team.

This was very much in evidence after the recent victory in the first Test against South Africa."This is a healthy sign and it should give plenty of options for the selectors before the 2007 World Cup in West Indies," he says. The return of Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman into the scheme of things for one-day cricket should be a good augury.

"It is unfortunate that Laxman had to miss the 2003 World Cup. The South African tour should help him in playing in the tournament this time. I think India is in the process of finding the right combination for the World Cup."

Robin Singh.

According to Robin Singh Sreesanth was among the best medium pacers that India had produced in recent times. "What impressed me was the way he moved the ball and at that speed he is always quite menacing." On Australian spinner Shane Warne's retirement, Robin Singh said he was a `genius and a cut above the rest'. "He revolutionised the art of leg-spin. He is an exceptionally talented bowler with a big heart. Cricketers like him come once in 100 years."

Ajay Jadeja another former India all-rounder who was with Robin Singh in Hyderabad echoed similar opinion about Shane Warne. "The thing which I liked in him, apart from his fabulous bowling, was the way he often applauded the batsman on the way back to the pavilion after being dismissed. I enjoyed that privilege a couple of times."

On the Indian team, Jadeja reiterated that it was too early to talk about the 2007 World Cup. "People started this talk even six months ago. After the first Test win against South Africa, they said we have moved closer to the World Cup triumph. And we may hear yet more opinions before the big event."

Jadeja said that he was a big fan of Greg Chappell as coach of Indian team. "I don't think he is doing anything wrong," he concluded.
