A dance workshop for men from January 8
|
The National Folklore Support Centre conducts a workshop on Devarattam as part of a series on folk performances of Tamil Nadu. The five-day workshop starts on January 8 and concludes on January 12. The timings are from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. The workshop will be conducted by Kannan Kumar of Bharati Folk Art School and Ch. Jaya Rao of Theatrelab, Chennai.
Devarattam is a social and ritual dance of the Silavaar section of the Kambala Nayakar community of Tamil Nadu. It is performed solely by men and is based on temple traditions and lifecycle rituals.
Participants having basic knowledge of dance would be at an advantage. They will be given hands on training in adavu (steps), dancing and drumming. The workshop will culminate in a performance by the participants on January 12.
The venue of the workshop is No. 505, Fifth Floor, Kavery Complex, 96. Nungambakkam High Road. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.
