Evening with the Ustad


Concern India Foundation, as a part of its fundraising initiative, is presenting an evening with Ustad Zakir Hussain accompanied by his brother Taufiq Qureshi. The other performers of the evening are Niladri Kumar on sitar, and Manipuri Jagoi Marup dancing drummers of Manipur at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall on January 13, 6.30 p.m.

Zakir Hussain, the classical tabla maestro, has made unprecedented strides in bringing his instrument to a global audience. Widely appreciated as an international phenomenon, his consistently brilliant and exciting performances have established him globally as one of India's most renowned cultural ambassadors. Taufiq Qureshi, an ace percussionist of India, is also an acclaimed composer is Zakir's brother. Being the son and disciple of the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Allarakha, Taufiq's performances showcase the traditional flavour and intricacies of Indian rhythm and the sparkle of contemporary world percussion.

Niladri Kumar, son and disciple of celebrated sitar player Pandit Kartick Kumar, is one of India's finest young sitar virtuosos, already recognised for his dazzling technical prowess and the maturity of his melodic acumen. A rare instrumentalist, he is equally at home playing traditional classical as in contemporary world music. Manipuri Jagoi Marup is one of India's premier performance troupes, combining dance, drumming and martial arts in its repertoire.

Tickets, priced at Rs 1,550, Rs. 1,050, and Rs. 550, are available at Landmark (Forum Mall), Crossword (Residency Road), Super Market (Brigade Road) and Anagrams Book Store.
