A fit year
Suneel Singh
The days of yoga are back. Any number of yoga gurus and masters can be seen these days - in parks, temples, ashrams and houses - giving `yog-abhyaas' to those intent on learning this ancient practice and apparently getting relief from a variety of nagging complaints. Like the ubiquitous stress, back ache, arthritis, sinusitis, gastritis, pain, etc.
In fact, noted yoga guru Suneel Singh has termed the year 2007 as "Yogmay Year" and has chosen a year calendar for promoting yoga.
Singh, a gold medallist in yoga, who has been practising it from the past 20 years, learnt yoga from Dhirendra Brahmacharya in Jammu and Kashmir way back in 1985.
Says Singh, "Yoga basically cures people of their mental and physical illness. People have a misconception that yoga is for old people, or for the sadhus who live in jungles but it is not so. Everyone deserves to be fit and yoga can be performed by people of all age groups." He says there is greater awareness among the people about the benefits of yoga. Singh has introduced a new form of yoga called "Urban yoga", which is basically a mixture of Indian and a Japanese form of art, chi (meditation). Asanas are for the body and meditation for the mind. Elaborating on the calendar, Singh says, "It's a new concept, first time in India anyone has used this as a medium."
And a calendar is used by everyone, be it in office or at home all 365 days. For his calendar, the asanas, which he has chosen, are quite simple but effective.
