SANCTUARY SPOTLIGHT
Mundantharai Sanctuary
Part of the Western Ghats, the Mundanthurai Sanctuary falls in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. With its lush forest cover, the sanctuary is home to a rich variety of animals, birds, reptiles and flora. The sanctuary along with the bordering Kalakkad sanctuary has been notified as a tiger reserve.
The forests range from dry deciduous to tropical wet evergreen, depending on the rainfall that varies from less than 1000mm in the lower reaches to nearly 4000 mm on the upper slopes.
Animals: Sighting a tiger is always a matter of luck and perseverance. But, there is no dearth of other animals that freely roam the forests such as mouse deer, leopard, rusty spotted cat, sambhar, spotted deer, Nilgiri langur, bonnet macaque, sloth bear and the Malabar giant squirrel.
Birds: The great pied hornbill, great Indian hornbill, Malabar grey hornbill, oriental bay owl and broad tailed grass warbler.
Reptiles: The king cobra, python, pit viper, monitor lizard and flying lizard.
Guides are available at the sanctuary to take you on its innumerable trekking trails. Vehicles may be taken in with prior permission.
