When it rains, it Porsche

Wouldn't you want to be in my shoes and drive the entire Porsche range of cars here in India?

As my passengers strained their neck muscles to keep track of the action ahead of us, they couldn't help but exclaim. We were driving around in a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, negotiating a downhill section of the off-road course laid out for us.

The reason for the excitement? From our tall vantage point in the Cayenne, we were watching a Carrera 4 convertible do a raw powerslide on the tarmac adjacent to our course, with all the grace and purpose Porsches are known for.

So this is how it is to be a part of the Porsche Roadshow experience. And I was lucky to be part of the experience. The Roadshow is a driving experience camp set up by Porsche to assist importers to implement driving events and transfer the experience of driving a Porsche to other countries. In simple terms, it is a brilliant way of showcasing new models to existing customers and also generating an opportunity for prospective customers to sample the thrills of driving a Porsche.

So why go through all the trouble of setting up a track and enduring the logistics nightmare of bringing eleven cars to India? After all, how many people in India will buy Porsches? Simply because, as a maker of exotic, low volume cars, in the two years since the manufacturer set up dealerships in India, Porsche has sold two hundred-odd cars, which certainly is commendable, if not surprising.

The India edition took place close to Mumbai at the Sahara Aamby Valley City's private airstrip. Three courses were laid out and all participants were guided by Porsche's professional instructors - a slalom course in a Porsche Cayman S, a handling and braking circuit in a 911 Carrera 4S, and an off-road section in a Cayenne Turbo. The event was capped with a demo of Porsche's professional trainers drifting the Cayenne, the Carrera 4S convertible and the 911 turbo. Thoroughly enjoyable, it was a brilliant two hours indeed. And I'm looking forward to more!
