CHAMPS ALL The victorious Manipur fencing team
Bangaloreans had the chance to watch some absorbing action at the Senior National Fencing Championship. Over 600 contestants from nearly 30 States turned up at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium with the Army and Navy. The States from the North East have always been the powerhouses in the sport. Thus it came as no surprise when fencers from Manipur dominated the championship.
Manipur swept all six golds in the men's and in the women's section, it accounted for five out of six. Manipur also bagged the men's and women's team titles. It is said Manipuris are talented because fencing is a part of an average Manipuri's life. This coupled with hard training gives them an extra edge. But it was quite evident that other states are slowly catching up. Punjab did well to secure the second spot in the meet and host Karnataka made a big impact. Karnataka lost to Manipur in the men's and women's finals.
A notable display from Lakshmi, who won a silver, was the highlight of Karnataka's show with a clutch of silvers and bronzes. The State coach Deban Singh was more than pleased with the performance: "What our fencers lacked was experience and they have done well in this meet. It is a just a matter of time, we can surely take on the Manipuris."
