WORKING OUT To stay strong and healthy

What it takes to be a bodybuilder? Ask the coaches in the city gyms and the instant reply would be, a lot of dedication.

Many begin their workouts just to stay fit, but the good results tempt them to take up professional bodybuilding.

And those, who got a chance to witness the beautifully sculpted figure of the participants at the recent Mr. Tiruchi-2007 contest, would be motivated to start pumping iron.

A routine

Though visiting gym is now a part of the routine for a sizeable number of city youths, still M. Rajendrakumar, coach at the Dr. Madankumar Memorial Gym feels that general misconceptions regarding exercising is forcing many to stay away.

"Bodybuilding is an art. It is not necessary for everyone to become professionals. But to stay fit and improve their personality, they need to do workouts. All the delusions about weight training have been scientifically proven wrong," he clarifies.

Proper guidance

The beginners at the gym are provided with a catalogue, which enumerates the details on the stance, breathing techniques and the exercises for shaping up chest, biceps, triceps, abdomen, shoulders and back.

Apart from sweating it out at the gymnasiums, healthy eating and proper rest also play a crucial role for attaining best results.

"There are food supplements, but a bit expensive. For those who cannot afford, I suggest natural food. Balanced diet matters much," says M. Sivakumar, coach at the Man Maker Gym, where he imparts special training to nearly 15 youngsters, many of whom aspire to make it big.

Tiruchi over the years has produced some high quality bodybuilders. Prominent among them are Sivaramasudan, Durai Raghunathan and Balagangadhar Tilak, who had returned with laurels in Mr. South India and Mr. Tamil Nadu contests some years back.

Mr. Rajendrakumar, who is also the Secretary of the Tiruchi District Amateur Bodybuilding Association (TDABA), says that the level of competition at the Mr. Tiruchi-2007 was very good and that many youngsters, who participated in the event, have it in them to match their seniors.

But the one who won a lot of appreciation from the audience was P. Gopinathan.

He bagged the Mr. Tiruchi title in the physically challenged category.

Success story

Gopinathan works as an electrician in a private concern and has shown a lot of guts to reach this level. "This is for the third time I am winning the title. I don't want to stop with this and wish to continue the success at the State-level," he says with confidence.

Another important aspect, which TDABA is focussing on, is creating awareness among the aspirants about the dangers of using steroids.

"There is no shortcut to success and there is no point in boosting up their figure using such performance enhancers. Whenever I get an opportunity to speak to the young bodybuilders I educate them on the harmful side effects of using steroids," Mr. Rajendrakumar says. So, what about the fitness freaks, who care a little about a career in bodybuilding.

"It is up to the people to adjust their crowded schedule and allot time. Once they get into the groove it is very hard to escape the routine, " says V. Ganesh, Proprietor, Rock Fort Gym.

Rejuvenation

For Arvind, an employee of a private firm, exercising is rejuvenation.

"Initially, I was in double mind whether to go to gym after a power packed day at office. But now it has become a routine and the results are very impressive as I have shed considerable weight."

Some of the youngsters, especially college students seem to have been attracted by the looks of Hrithik Roshan and other cine stars. And Shyam has enrolled himself in a gym nearby to his house, wanting to have muscles just like the Bollywood actor.

"Hrithik was awesome in Dhoom-2. Let me try my best."
