To sir with love

G. Balakrishnan Nair will be felicitated on February 5

ERUDITE SCHOLAR G. Balakrishnan Nair is a guiding light to many

The gentle light of serenity glows steadily on the face of G. Balakrishnan Nair - erudite scholar and teacher par excellence. This scholar is more like a guru. And in this respect, Prof Balakrishnan Nair is a beacon who has not only removed the darkness of ignorance, but kindled the light of awareness in many lives.

Turning point

The guiding light to this guru came in an unusual form - that of his son Aravindan. Balakrishnan Nair was already a scholar of repute who had done considerable research on literature, Indian philosophy and the scriptures, when the sudden passing away of seven-year-old Aravindan became a turning point in his life.

The manner in which the little one calmly passed away with a prayer on his lips, pointed out to him, the true, imperishable nature of the self. He then decided to devote his life to the study of Vedanta and propagate its message for the benefit of the world.

Selfless service

Prof. Nair who has post graduate degrees in Malayalam, Hindi and Sanskrit, started as a lecturer in Mahatma Gandhi College in the city. Till his retirement in 1978 from Government service, he taught in many colleges. The doors of his home have always been open to free classes and he gives discourses whenever and wherever his service take him. The list of Prof. Balakrishnan Nair's works is, quite literally, voluminous.

The complete interpretation of all the literary works of Sree Narayana Guru, running to 10 volumes is a masterpiece of great beauty.

Vedanta Darsanam, a study of the major Upanishads, interpretations of Sankaracharya's works, discussions on the Malayalam works of Ezhuthachan and Poonthanam, Bhagavatha Hridayam, a philosophical reflection on the Sree Maha Bhagavatham, and Bhashya Pradeepam in which the Brahma sutras are transliterated into Malayalam, are some of his works.

The inaugural Vyasa Peetham Puraskaram of the School of Bhagavad Gita will be conferred on him at a function on February 5, at Vyloppilli Samskriti Bhavan.
