The mush register

Sarangan

Mention of piston, bhp or barrel does not cause a puzzled look on her face. When I use the biker's jargon, she understands me perfectly. Following a course in aeronautical engineering at the Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology, I joined a private airlines as maintenance crewman. Much later, she took up the same course at the same institution and joined the department in the airlines I was working in. Around that time, the biking bug bit me and I went on a buying spree. I used to pick up models that had failed, tweak them up in such a way that they matched the successful ones in power and performance. She would be all ears when I would tell her how good a bike was on the road. As she is familiar with machines, nothing would go over her head. She used to enjoy going on long rides. During our courtship, we biked to Pondicherry on Valentine's Day.

Lakshmi

I would love to head out of the city on the bike with him. Since I don't have a strong back now, I refrain from such fun rides. Often, we find ourselves talking about bikes. Sometimes it strikes me as odd and I ask him, `Can't we talk about something other than machines?' He has a collection of bikes and is always looking to add to it. His parents can't understand this obsession. I understand their objections are valid, but I also know the hobby means a lot to him. Sarangan and I would not be as happy if we had married somebody else. Since we are in the same profession, we understand its challenges and have lots of common things to discuss. Bikes or aircraft, he is technically sound. That is part of the reason why I fell in love with him.

As told to

PRINCE FREDERICK
