BIG NAMES Man Booker winner Kiran Desai also features in the list of nominees

The nominees for the Hutch Crossword Book Award 2006 have been announced.

Shortlisted from over 110 valid entries, the nominees will compete in the categories of English Fiction, Indian Language Fiction Translation and English Non-Fiction.

The winning entries, who will be felicitated in Mumbai on February 21, will each receive a cash award of Rs. 3 lakh, a trophy and a citation. Hutch and Crossword have also instituted a `Popular Award,' where readers vote via SMS for their favourite book from among those short-listed, and the winner will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a trophy.

English fiction

The nominees in the English Fiction category include Vikram Chandra's `Sacred Games,' Kiran Desai's `The Inheritance of Loss,' Gautam Malkani's `Londonstani,' `Racist' by Kunal Basu, `Bougainvillea House' by Kalpana Swaminathan, Niladri Dasgupta's `Or The Day Seizes You' and `Home' by Manju Kapur.

Among the Indian Language Fiction Translation nominees are `In A Forest,' `A Deer,' `The Man From Chinnamasta' and Kesavan's `Lamentations.'

And the nominees for the English Non-Fiction Category are Janaki Bakhle's `Two Men And Music,' Yashodhara Dalmia's `Amrita Sher-Gil: A Life,' `India's Legal System: Can It Be Saved' by Fali S. Nariman, Vikram Seth's `Two Lives,' `The Shaping Of Modern Gujarat: Plurality, Hindutva And Beyond' by Achyut Yagnik and Suchitra Sheth and `Brideless In Wembley' by Sanjay Suri.
