Chords and Notes

BEST OF BUDDHA LOUNGE

Silk Road, Rs.275

This album is particularly for those seeking an altogether different experience in music. From the first number till the end, all you would do is close your eyes, sway your head, and quite unknowingly enter a world of your making where nothing but your mind dictates things. The result? An extremely soothing experience. Something that perhaps only yoga or meditation can deliver. Particularly the numbers "Rama", "Secrets", "Spiritual trance" and "Guru".

Though "Ishwar Allah" and "Mon Palais De Solitude" have a calming effect, they also somewhere give away the producer's aim of targeting the western world in search of Oriental mysticism through them. The use of instruments, particularly the sitar, the high of the drums, the level vocal intonations, are some of the factors that make the album so very interesting.

THE NEW MOON OF EAST

Silk Road, Rs.275

This is an offering from the Tibetan monks of Gaden Shartse and Corciolli monastery in dedication to those who died in Tibet during the Chinese rule. And as expected, the numbers have the invocation of the monks coming together in a chorus, the gutteral voice so characteristic and moving at times. The "secret mantra" and the "Dedicational prayer" can particularly make you experience the mysticism of Tibetan Buddhism. Recommended for those seeking something beyond the mundane.

HUNGARIAN JAZZ STORE

BMC

This four CD collection is a wholesome anthology of Jazz from the land of the Danube. While the first two cover modern Jazz, CD 3 combines ethno jazz with the avant-garde. CD 4 is vocal jazz with space dedicated to both youth jazz and old-timer jazz. With exhaustive notes for every number, it gives valuable context to the music. While it is hard to pinpoint single tracks, CD 3 is the most interesting. Here ethnic sounds merge with pure jazz, creating surprising yet startling sounds. This "world sound" incorporates Hungarian and Eastern folk music with mainstream jazz. Folk instruments like the woodwind instrument tarogato, folk flutes and a kaval, a flute, which is associated with mountain shepherds, are used creatively. The tunes of Roman gypsy jazz create indigenous sounds, which make their presence felt through suggestion rather than assertion.

This collection offers something special for every listener.
