Good morning, Delhi!

NEW CUP OF TEA Rajeshwari is the new radio jockey for "Big Chai"

Ever since the invention of the radio, listeners have been charmed by the voice of the faceless presenter, male or female, who makes a fine art of speaking for `your ears only'. Now, it is not just a mesmerising voice that is required, it is a known face too. Ever since Vidya Balan portrayed a radio jockey in Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and before her, Preity Zinta worked her RJ magic in Salaam Namaste, the profession of a radio jockey seems to have attracted added glamour. And radio channels seem to be vying with each other to rope in actors to present programmes.

In the fray is Big Chai, a breakfast show on the channel Big 92.7 FM, which earlier banked on Mona Singh of Jassi Jaise Koi Nahin fame. It has now brought Rajeshwari to host the programme. On the airwaves for a while, Rajeshwari has been heard interacting with Delhiites in a jocular way and playing songs of their choice.

This versatile actor-singer-dancer was in the Capital recently to promote Big Chai. She said, "I have never tried my hand at radio. I am delighted to host the Big Chai through which I get a chance to interact with the Delhiites that I otherwise couldn't have done." Through this programme she may also "solve some people's problems".

Awards

Rajeshwari has won accolades for her acting in films such as Aaytya Gharat Gharoba and Sardari Begum for which she won the National Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Her music albums "Hulle Hullare", "Mukhda Piya Ka" and "Umang" also brought her fame. She was also seen in the dance show Nach Baliye. Sharing her experience of the TV reality show, she said, "It really felt good to be appreciated for the hard work we put in. We had a hectic schedule and at times we had rehearsals till midnight. Since I love dancing, when the offer to perform in Nach Baliye I accepted it readily."

Background

An early exposure to the stage has undoubtedly benefited her vocation as an actress.

"From a tender age my parents encouraged me to explore different things. I learnt Bharatanatyam and also classical music. I was also good at sports, but did not pursue it as a career. All this has made me very disciplined. Music and acting are interrelated. My classical training helps me to emote well on the screen, and acting lends grace to my dance."

Under Benegal's baton

She has also worked with the distinguished director, Shyam Benegal.

"Working with him was a learning experience for me. He taught me such different aspects of emoting that I wasn't aware of. Despite enjoying a great status, he is so down to earth. I have worked in six of his films," she said.

Speaking of her forthcoming projects, she added, "I am busy with various stage shows. I have just returned after a show in Aurangabad. My next dance shows will be held in Delhi, Surat and Ludhiana. I will also be seen in a serial with my husband (Varun Badola), which is to be aired soon on Star Plus. I am also doing a film."
