Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary
Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Mukundapuram Taluk of Thrissur district. Spread across 85 sq. km. on the western slopes of the Nelliyampathi hills, the sanctuary is 25 km from Amballoor village in Thrissur.
Flora and fauna: The forests here are tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous. The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of flora and all major species of fauna of the southern side of the Western Ghats are well represented here. The common mammals found are sloth bear, elephant, sambar deer, barking deer, bonnet macaque, Nilgiri langur, slender loris, porcupine, wild boar and wild dog.
Several species of reptiles, amphibians and fish are also there. According to a recent survey, 275 species of birds have been recorded.
As part of community based eco-tourism, the local Malaya tribal communities organise trekking, bamboo rafting and camping at scenic sites (natural pools and catchments areas) inside the sanctuary.
Best time to visit: November to February. To sight wildlife, the best time is between April and June

Nearest airport: Nedumbassery (60 km)
Accommodation: Accommodation can be arranged at the Inspection Bungalow, near the Chimmony Dam. Lodging facilities are also available at Ampalloor. Tent accommodation inside the forest will be arranged by community-based eco-tourism.
