Take a trip to China on Discovery Travel and Living Channel
|
From the bustling Shanghai to the scenic countryside, from the spiced pork to fresh fried noodles, Discovery Travel and Living will showcase China in a five-day long programme (February 19 on 23, 9 p.m.) titled "China Week."
Ellis Emmett (February 19) treks the Great Wall of China and departs from Chongqing for a week-long trip down the mighty Yangtze river. He wraps up his trip with a boat ride up the Shenlong crook tributary.
Celebrated New Zealand chef Peter Gordon (February 20) discovers the roots of Cantonese cuisine. In the northern mountains, he cooks succulent spiced pork over an open fire in a Yao tribal house and in the ancient former capital of Foshan. A lesson in making delicate dimsums with one of the world's leading experts is followed by sampling fried cobra. The next stop is Chaozhou, for some of the most unusual street food, including fresh fried rice noodles and eel. Across the border in Fujian, Peter visits the tea mountains. Finally he visits the glittering city of Xiamen.
After a vigorous massage and an attempt to become a contortionist, Megan (February 21) leaves Shanghai for Suzhou, the silk capital. From here, a day-long train ride takes her to the Yellow Mountains and her trip ends with a quick side visit to the 10,000 Buddhist carvings in the caves at Dazu and the 8,000 members of the Terracotta Army of Xian. Anthony Bourdain (February 23) visits Tiananmen Square, dines at Li Qun Roast Duck Restaurant and learns calligraphy from a local artiste.
On February 23, in the special edition of Globe Trekker, the host travels worldwide to explore Chinatowns across the world from Malaysia and Singapore to Peru, San Francisco, New York, London and Hong Kong.
