Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated close to the Myanmar (Burma) border in the picturesque north eastern State of Nagaland, the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary boasts rich flora and fauna. The sanctuary lies in the Pungro circle headquarters and is spread over an area of 642 ha. It receives high rainfall and is home to rare species.

The area is covered with hills, high ridges, deep gorges and narrow valleys. Because of this variation in altitude, vegetation is equally varied. The forest is tropical to sub-tropical. Because of heavy rainfall, the forests are full of undergrowth.

More than a dozen species of ferns and orchids are found in this district. Rhododendrons are found flowering pleasantly in March-April. Plenty of dalchini and tejpatta are found scattered in the area.

Animals: Tiger, hoolock gibbon, panther, jungle cat, Himalayan bear, bison, sambar, barking deer, wild boar and slender loris.

Birds: Indian horn bill, tragopan pheasant, grey pheasant, jungle fowl, green pigeon and doves

Best Time to Travel: November to February
